Are 1.9 Diesels normally noisey?

Hi

Our 1996 Diesel Polo is making any insults about diesels being tractors true! Its fine when its running along but when its idleing at the lights etc its annoyingly noisey. The noise sounds as if the exhaust is banging against something but a mechanic checked it out and said it was fine. Give it a little gas to get it over 1500Rpm and its fine.

Is it normal or is it likely to be broke?

Ta

Joe

I have this in my diesel polo too and it vibrates alot when idle too. I got a new monifold back exhaust and that helped, but it still is noisy and vibrates :(

Funny you should say that, i have a 1.9 and i was thinking just how quiet it was. So maybe something is wrong, or it could come with age depending on mileage etc. Diesels tend to get noisy as they get older. A regular service helps prevent this.
Have you checked that you still have a engine tray under the engine, this shuts out a lot of the noise.

Mine is the same - it just resinates so much when idleing i hold my foot on the accelerator to shut it up abit.

Anyone got any ideas?

Maybe one of the exhaust heatshields is loose?

Engine mounts?
