My Full DLS Setup - HOT!!!

I’ve pretty much been obsessed with my car for the past couple weeks and the ‘project’ will soon come to an end (doubt the obsession will :p).

I have contacted a local company that handles professional mobile car audio installations and they will be out fitting the polo with a full DLS sound system.

The components of the setup:
  • DLS UP6 x4 (with a tweeter for each - UP1C)
  • DLS UR10 x2 subs
  • DLS A7 Amp
  • DLS Power Cap 1F with DVM
This is the system at its most basic layout. I designed the buffle box for the subs which sits over the amp and houses the power cap and circuit breakers as well. At the same time I installed the 'hard' bit of wiring for the 'fog mod' as the car was pretty much stripped down.

And here are the pics:

The sub box with the power cap, two circuit breakers and 2x 220ohm resistors in parallel and the A7 amp.

tidy. I dont see the requirement for two sets of components (unless you have two pairs of mids up front?) nor the need for a power cap but each to their own.

other than that though- the deisgn and execution looks clean. :)

Hey there :)

Thanks for your comments - a lot more pics can be seen here:

The power cap is useful as the A7 is a bit power hungry and reduces the stress on the battery anyways. I'm totally happy with this setup and I'm off to go wash n' take her for a spin...

well documented. lots of work went into that.

have disagree on the power cap thoguh- they can actually worsen the electrical state of a system in the long run!

Heh...I'm sure some of you must have wondered if I was going for the 'flux capacitor' idea...well I was kinda :p

It actually does look quite sweet but at least it would take care of any interference (ripples) in the power. In the long run how will it affect the system?

Thanks :)

short run no real problems at all. long run can present you with a knackered cap/battery and worse case- an alternator as well.

In real terms 1 Farad is next to nothing in the time it takes to discharge. Think of it this way the cap stores power which is provided through the alternator charge, once the cap discharges (which is normally within a couple of seconds- if that) it then has to pull that power to "store up" again from the alternator.

This means your alternator is working double time to charge the battery, the cap AND run the electrics in the car itself.

Caps look nice- but their usage in real life applications are very limited- I have had conversations with plenty of industry pro's who disregard them altogether and me personally I have never got on with caps either!

There are some people who beleive however that in a small low power SQ system (say between 200-300 watts RMS) that a cap can increase responsiveness in subwoofer performance, I must admit whilst I have my doubts with this appllication, I have never tried it in this particular way so I cant comment :)

for the money though, Its far far more effective to go for a split charge system (split charge relay- £20, heavy duty diesel/dry cell battery £70/£150 respectively) Given the average cost of a cap is anything between £60-£160 it works out roughly the same cost wise but the performance benefits are far far greater.

oh and charge comparison?

average cap= 1-5 farads
BatCAP(cross between battery and cap) = 80-400 farads
dry cell battery.....lots and lots of farads ;)

bsodmike you've done the work already and looks smart as hell so for now at least i would keep it- but in the long run if you get electrical problems, rip it out, upgrade the "big 3 cables" (battery to alternator, alternator to chassis, battery to chassis) and put in a split charge.

then you will notice a HUGE difference in the way your system responds. :)

love the install, ive been thinking about getting some dls stuff in my car (currently 05 corsa sri - soon to be gti) just wondering can you fit a optima battery in replacement for the standard one. also what size speakers have the gtis got?

yes you can and 6.5" components in front doors, 6.5" coaxs rear quarters.

Thanks a lot guys! Today finished installing the front fogs and now pondering how I can install a keyless entry system & alarm...any help would be appreciated - also posted in the electronic section :)
