Buying a GTi

Well, in the next month or sooner with a bit of luck, I'm hoping to get a GTi, what does everyone class as high mileage etc on one, or are these the kind of cars where mileage doesn't matter to a degree?
Also feel free to add any other things to look out for except the obvious check for the Pedal Box Recall work being done.
Thanks
Tom

The main bits of a GTi engine come from previous well proven VW engines, so the engine itself should last you very long (assuming you look after it and it hasn't been thrashed constantly).
I hear the gearboxes and clutches aren't great on the GTi, I think it depends a lot on how you drive.
The youngest GTi you will find is going to be at least 3+ years old so I'd say the average milage you should be expecting on most of the Gtis you see are going to be 40,000 to 50,000.
Like i said, if you find a well looked after GTi and you look after it yourself you should easy see 100k.
Don't think milage is a huge issue, only takes a few hundred miles of bad driving to mash up an engine.
Make sure the brakes dont bind, make sure the a/c works and the headlight washer jets. Pedal box recall code should show up as 30CI in the log book.

Mileage is only an issue on resale, they are fine upto 100k+, just look for one with 40-50k tbh. Then you should get a bargin and a car that will sell easy. Look for low previous owners also, otherwise it might have been thrashed alot then sold on...

Yeah thanks, that's what I'm doing I did find one with 3 previous owners, so closed that straight away. There's a nice one I've found, just gotta wait for the money to come through.

I wudnt bother looking until you have the money in your hand, GTi's dont stick arround long if they are good, every1 i went to see sold in a few days, even the s**t ones.

This is what I plan for it once I have one - Thanks to PoloSilver for the picture, maybe not quite as low as that, all depends on cost and ease of the job. Just general smoothing and a bad boy bonnet.

I have just test drive a 2nd hand Polo GTI (2001), the engine sounds a bit noisy at 1000rpm (idle) is it normal?? Beside the padal box, timing belt and the above, what other things should I look into????
thank you experts,
Cheers,
Dave

When idle at 1,000rpm i cannot hear my engine... sounds like a slight background noise!
