ABout to buy a Mark V and looking for advice

I was down at my local VW dealer and test drove a Mark VI S, but as they didn't have an SE in, they found a Mark V SE at another location and are bringing it across for me to look at. Is the Mark V substantially different from the Mark VI in how it drives/engine/build/trim etc?

This is the description they gave me of the car:

2001 51 Reg Volkswagen Polo 1.4 SE (75 BHP), 3 Doors, Manual, Hatchback, Petrol, 36,000 miles, Reflex Silver Metallic, Anti-lock brakes,Driver& passenger seat height adjustment,Driver and passenger air bags,Electronic air conditioning,14in alloy wheels,Key central Door locking,Electric Door mirrors,Front electric windows,Front/rear head restraints,Power-assisted steering,Radio/cassette,Rear wash wipe,Rev counter,Trip computer,Rake adjustable steering column/wheel,Immobiliser,anton cloth interior.

As it'll be a VW Approved car, I guess I can assume it will be in good cosmetic and mechanical condition, but a) does this look worth going for, and b) is there anything I should look out for as signs of potential problems?

Cheers,
Loo.

welcome to the forum!

the mk5 has the rectangular headlights like this

while the mk6 is on a totally different chassis and is slightly bigger, and has the distinctive round headlights. (like in my sig pic)

ive owned a mk4 (same chassis as mk5, with minor exterior/interior differences) and was pretty fun/well put together.

SE is pretty well specc'd up, depends what teh price is

Thanks for the pic & the reply, always handy to at least have seen what I might be buying! It's from a dealer so will be VW 'approved' with a years warranty & AA cover, and is £5,500, sound ok?

£5,500 is quite expensive, you could get a low mileage GTi for that!!

i paid 5,500 for my standard 1.0E on a W plate
that was over a year ago and it had 11,000 miles on the clock

5,500 does seem abit dear, but its from a vw dealer and you can be assured its been well looked after.
o and it has the air conditioning 8)

i'd shop around first though just to compare offers

Personally id never buy a 2nd hand car from a dealership but thats just me... i got my W reg 1.4 S with 22k on the clock last august for £3,600 the VW garage wanted £6,500 for a lower spec car. Sold it this month for £5,000 so just shows if you shop arround you can do alright!

If buying private, do a AA check and a HPI. As for the dealership car coming with AA cover, you can buy that for like £100 so id forget that...

Just had the dealer on the phone, the person that was trading in the Polo has sold it privately so I won't be buying it.. Anyone know where in the Camberley/Farnborough/Reading area I can look for an 1.4 SE (or better) in good nick at a decent price?

Cheers,
Loo.

exactly, i do all my searches on there :D

i reckon £5000 is ok for a dealer - SE spec is pretty high - could prob get a 100hp model if ur lucky enough to find 1!

but as Phill mentioned b4, £5500 is GTI money!
good luck!
