polo 1.4 TDI - "crunch" noise on cold start

Hi, my friend has got a 2004 VW Polo 1.4 TDI which makes a "crunch" noise when she starts it up from cold.
The garage told her it was nothing to worry about and common to all diesel engines, but then at the first service they replaced the fuel pump when she complained again about it. However, the problem persists.
No other problems and the car runs fine. She's just a bit worried it might put potential buyers off when she comes to sell it.
Any ideas?
