Power Box First Impressions!

Hi All

I fitted my Power Box (http://www.power-system.co.uk) on Thursday last week, and after some initial teething problems, it's running fine.

So... I thought I'd better tell you all about it!

Basically it's a natty chrome box (about the size of a pack of playing cards, maybe a bit longer) with 5 wires coming out of it.

These 5 wires are spliced into existing wires going into your ECU.

It works by fooling your ECU by altering signals coming from various sensors in the engine. The ECU responds by increasing fuel and timing (I think!)

The result... More Torque!!! The car pulls away nicely even in 5th (obviously not from a standing start  !) I was messing about on the way home tonight accelerating away in 5th and making myself grin :D ...

Really easy to fit, only took about 1 hour to solder it all in and make it look nice, we had a few problems, but I'm going to contact the manufacturers asking that they improve the instructions. If the instructions were 100% it really would only take an hour tops (if your mechanic/auto electrician is good at soldering!)

The manufacturer states that different ECU's need differing amounts of time/mileage for the box to be fully recognised.

Anyway, I've done just over 200 miles since it was fitted and I'm starting to feel a lot more torque.

They recon that if you're not leathering it, the fuel consumption should stay about the same. If you've got a lead foot, expect about 10% less mileage out of a tank (compaired to ragging it when standard).

Anyway, that's me done for now... I'll let you know if my fuel consumption goes crazy or if anything goes wrong as soon as I know!

Just for info, I'm going to get to a Rolling Road soon to see what difference it has made.

much as i hate to contradict you josh my 1.4i gets better economy regadless, leathered or feathered as before
before 1tank (40 L) 390-400 clicks
after 1tank (40L) 420-480 clicks

Hi

I was just saying what the manufacturer told me...

I'll wait and see what I get out of my tank... usually 250 miles and light comes on.

Sounds pretty cool that you are getting much better economy!

Well.....

Petrol warning light came on today...

Usually comes on at 250 miles...

...

...

Today, it came on at 265 miles  8)

I've booked a session on the Rolling Road at John Noble Motorsport in Chesterfield for Saturday. I'll scan the printout if it's not too embarrassing!

this sounds very interesting!!! Just how much of a difference do u notice on a 1.4 8v tho.?

Is there any advantage of doing this over getting the car rechipped in the normal way? The price is about the same if not slightly more for this powerbox. Any chance of some more details on how to fit the thing?

Sorry bout the barrage of questions but I wanna know sum more about this thing b4 I spend 240 squid on it.

on a 1.4 8v there is quite a noteable diff check out the vids in my snowy pics post in the mkv forum and you can see the dials
for the why not a chip Q its still scannable by a vag com its fully removeable and also its only 5 wires so its easy as pie
oh and a full chip for us is non existant.
im sure josh will back me up on how she pulls thruogh the gears cos i made my polo scream down the phone today at him (shhh i dont think he`ll get in a car with me now :P )
btw josh the smell of rubber is still there lol im driving about with my windows down in -3 - -4 cos of it :D

Wow! This sounds like a nice little tool 8)

Josh, I take it your a distributer or something? Do you know if this part is unique to engine code or do they just go on with some soldering? Also, if I did get this done is it worth informing the insurance company
I'm seriously considering this now, looking at the website I could get nearly 14bhp gain!!

yes there engine specific and remember that the extra isnt at peak its prolly lower down i.e. 3k so that there are no flat spots. and yes at last count josh iwas the only official importer

Yeah, as long as your car is listed on the company's web site, I can get you one...

Like 2k said... The 14bhp won't be at the top of the rev range, it will be lower down (you can feel it!)

As with any modification TELL your insurance company! If you don't, and anything happens, they will disown you!

Give me a shout if you are interested

Hi
I have a golf 2.0l (115bhp). I am interested in the power system but i am unsure about about the 15 BHP gains and 18.07 torque increase.

I already have a supersprint system and a K+N panel filter so the next mod would be a chip.

Josh , has your car been on the rolling road?...

What realistic figures should i get? Any more help on chips would be grateful.

the 15 hp wont be at peak its lower down i.e. maybe at 4k. the polo gti had 15 hp stock and the power system gave josh 128.1 hp but as both he and i can testify they are a ery good mod that allows you to get up the box faster due to the torque and on my wheezy little 1.4 8v it allows me to contend with much bigger engined cars
