Hi,
I came across this site from an american forum. The closest we have found to HID bulbs are the philips Blue Vision, however, this company produces bulbs at colour temp 5000 deg kelvin.
Here is the link:

Here is what they look like: aftermarket left factory right
Cheers,
Ian

These look pretty blue. Wonder if they're road legal in Europe...?

The Philips seem to be the best we can get here (road legal) - on their own they are not bad (well better than standard halogen) but against your HID's, the blue lights of a cop car would look yellow Ash
I'm trying to find out if they are legal or not...not much info on the site, but checking PIAA's site, similar bulbs are not road legal here...who's gonna check anyway

That's why I have ordered a kit from Martyn. The way xenon's work and the way they last are unmatched by halogen. Upgraded bulbs are great, but will never match the real HID's, especially at 5600K.
I think it's well worth the £300 or so
Those upgraded bulbs use a blue filter on the glass to gain the HID 'effect' and actually put out less light and won't last very long, where as a HID capsule will last 3000 hours + and emits a wider, further light at only 35w!
I have never felt a xenon lamp that is hot or even warm, where as a halogen lamp gets hot.
Look here for an explanation of xenon and what 'K' means etc

As regards lighting in the UK - here goes (i think i'vew got this right)
- the only colours to be visible from the front is a constant white light, or an intermittant amber light (indicators)
- the only colour to be sen from the side is amber.
- the only colours to be seen from the rear are red, white or amber.
any variations are illegal.
A problem arises because you will never have a 'white' light. even standard bulbs have a slight tint. therefore its at the officers discretion.
The way i see it is anything that is TUV approved and E marked is perfectly legal
