Mk1 Advice?

Two areas I need a little bit of help with!
1. Tailgate struts - I can't get a VW part as they are now obselete and, bothe the repalcements I bought from ECP fail to hold the tailgate up!

Can anyone recommend a source for these?
2. Dashboard speaker grille - mines an '81 model with the speaker grille in front of the passenger. Do I need to manouevre the speaker up behind the dash to fit it, or can the speaker grille trim be removed?

Hi David, i can help with point 2:
The speaker is removed (fitted) from the back, you need to remove the glovebox/shelf first. Then peer up and you'll see how it's mounted via plastic ligs and spring washers. Can't help with the tailgate struts, but i'm sure if you measured them there will be replacements from a different car that would fit.

I had to replace my tailgate strut as well, and found it a bit tricky to source too! Finally got one from Andrew Page through Shipley Motor Factors. Probably not much help, but try their website - theres an online ordering thingy that may or may not work for you (

good luck

would one from a mk2 coupe fit?
or take measurements of your old ones and get onto somewhere like breakerlink etc (online scrappy networks / agents) and see if anyone turns up who both a/ knows what theyre on about (be wary of any company starting "V B") and b/ has the bit at a reasonable price

My initial attempt was a Mk2 strut, however as Steve says, it has different fittings.
Steve - thanks for the details re Andrew Page. They weren't prepared to post to NI, however they gave me their suppliers numbers and I've got 2 on their way!

Hey, nothing cheeky about it - £24.90 inc VAT, but definitely a quality replacement for my brush shaft!
