One option, i've seen several polos(6N and 86c's) here in the EU (NL,D) with motorbike carbs:
This guy has build Honda CBR 900 (38 mm) keihin carbs in his 6N polo with 1.6 engine (engine code AEE)

Other things he will/already has modified are exhaust and cil.head(better flow)
His goal: from 75bhp original to about 120bhp  8)

It was just a sample of things you can do with your engine.
This guy with that 1,6l 75BHP engine fitted keihin carburetors those were originaly used on a Honda CBR 900 Motorcycle.

Sorry but - Virtually nothing......

- Exhaust is restricted by the cat (can't junk it without MOT problems) and the exhaust port size - big bore back box will just make noise no benefit

- Inlet is restricted by the inlet port size and the size of the throttle body - I'm working on this area but I'm not hopeful of a simple bolt on route to more bhp

- Induction kits will make more noise and produce less horsepower

- A panel filter in the std airbox might help a bit - make it breather better and keep the cold air feed

- No one does a chip for them and to be honest that would be a trade off anyway without other mods

- I think someone does a cam for them but to be honest (no offence intended) about that too if you can't cope with fireblade carbs on a car engine you aren't gonna cope with installing and setting up a cam.

- I wont even start on engine transplants

In summary 1.4 8V - it's a nice torquey engine which doesn't like to be reved much after 4500 it's all over - change your driving style - short shift and use the torque and it gets quite lively

My target bhp is 80 - I have 60 now and a spare head - just need ECU (still) and a throttle body and then I can bring the project forward
