Any filter will increase the noise, K&N have a well deserved reputation though.

All will give more roar.....

Very few will give more performance - most will give less - unless they are very well made and located plus isolated from the heat in the engine bay.

And don't start on about cold feed pipes they are pretty useless....

If you take your airbox off

pretend you are the engine and suck thro it (like the engine will) where it's bolted to the throttle body with your hand on the open end that is ducted behind the bumper away from the heat of the engine bay

what you will find is that 100% of the air is being drawn from the cool area in front of the engine

You can put as many inch flexible tubes to areas around the filter whereever it is situated and the engine will take the air from where ever it can - normally it will grab warm air mixed with the little bit that comes from the tubes it will not suck air down the tubes because they are not sealed into the filter.

Ideal solution is

- a plastic (rather than metal which can heat up and transfer heat to the air) casing that can hold a reserve of air above the throttle body

- linked to a inlet that's in front of the engine to get the coolest air posible (prefably in still air so when it's raining water droplets, from road spray or rain, aren't sucked up it) Behind a bumper is ideal

- with a flap arrangement that can allow warmed air in when the engine is cold in the winter to stop icing and assist with the warm up phase

Just need to install a filter to keep the air particulate free somewhere in the system and it would be the best solution

Anyone recognise that description

K&N replacemen t filter and drill the standard airbox.

It's pikey, but sometimes achieves the best results. Obv. if you go for looks you want something different.

Still on the subject, is there any driveability/performance benefit from a uprated panel filter? If so, which ones? I know that the makers always claim big things, but I'd be interested to hear people's experiences. I was thinking about getting one for the 16v, but if there's no point I'll save myself 40 quid...

a bmc/cda will give you the roar you want and not lose any performance...as its boxed in and cold air directly to it...but about 150+ of you squis...

A K&N air filter element costs about £10-20 right? model# E-1210 for an 8V 1.4

Is it much worth it than buying a new filter element come every service? And anyone know where I can get one from in London? I've search ebay and no joy.
