i got a polo the other day (p reg 1.0) and noticed that when i start up the car the ignition makes a high pitched squeaky noise. the same happens then i turn off the engine.
is this normal or something that is easily sorted?
thanks in advance

ok start off by checking the oil and getting it serviced and get an oem filter put on as oem filters are about the only ones that have a non return valve in them so that when you start the engine there isnt an empty filter to fill before the top end gets "wet" if you ever start an old diesel engine (mk2 golfs are bad for this) you will see that the oil pressure warning light will stay on for ages because the old and work oil pump has to fill the filter and then get up enough pressure to get the oil up to the head
this lack of oil could be scoring your cam
while your in there check the tension of the alternator belt and any other accesioriy belts
if it continues then try and start her with the cluch depressed to eliminate any transmission isses

thanks for the advice kidder.
oil pressure in the hydraulic tappets makes a noise apparently, but one of my mates said it could be that my belt is too tight. the sound comes from that side of the engine, so i'll go along with that.
i'll try startin with the clutch down
i get that 'IN 02' messgae when i put the keys in aswell, how the fook do you get rid of that? it only got its MOT a few weeks ago and theres no way im going to look for a vw dealership like it says in the book.
sorry for my lack of mechanical knowledge, i used to have a mini
thanks

starting up with the clutch down didnt work, bugger.
i had a listen before and it sounds like its coming from the cam belt rather than the alternator belt.

Chief
Sorry if I p****d you off the other day. I read your post after coming back from the pub and the alcohol got the better of me.
Having a sick motor is no fun especially when you just paid good money for it.
Hope you get it sorted.
