Hi guys, just joined the forum today cos my g/f has a problem with the door lock on her mk4 Polo.

She bought the car about 4 months ago - N reg, 1.4CL, 19,800 genuine miles, f/s/h, excellent condition from an old lady for £1,500!

Bargain i thought, especially with that mileage.
Anyway, has been a brilliant car until Saturday afternoon when the drivers side door lock wouldn't work, the key would turn in the lock without actually doing anything.

So, found this forum, took off door card and saw that the bar that links the key cylinder to the actual lock had broken at one end (think it's called the excentric?)

somebody had said that the part can be easily bought for about 50p at VW dealer, or from a scrappy.

My question is - is it easy to fit? ie just connect hooked end through hole on rear of key cylinder on door, then other end into the hole on the lock opposite?

any details from anyone who has done this would be appreciated - last time i fiddled with the lock on my old astra i had to have the whole lock replaced!

how does the door lock pin connect to this at all?

yeah its a peice of p*** to do really

can do it without taking the door card off, open the door, and look at the edge of the door, with the lock bolts on. you'l see a screw thats set at an angle, might be covered up by a little cap, pop that off and undo the screw.

take the screw out. then push the handle of the door, towards the bonnet of the car, this will release the lock cylinder and the handle in one.

you should then be able to see how easy it is. on the lock cylinder itself there is a spring, compress the spring so that u can fir the new excentric part in it. and yeah it costs about 50p or less.

just make sure your given the right excentric, else it wont work atall.

Managed to fix it in the end.

Went to the local dealer to get the excentric, they advised i took whole handle with me cos usually a couple of parts break, not just the excentric part.

Because i had the old (faulty) excentric, it is no longer available so had to have the new, modified, stronger part.

The new part has a thicker 'hook' end on it to stop breaking, so the new hook is too big to hook into the loop of the old key barrel, so need to buy new modified parts to replace.

While at delaer also noticed that the 'carrier' (gold/brass coloured metal part that goes between excentric and barrel) had a post broken off, so needed that too.

So in the end i had to buy:

excentric for £1.38,
key barrel £8.68,
carrier £1.65
and two springs £0.33 each

all plus VAT.

total £14.53

Once assembled the key wouldn't work in lock, even though i made sure that i put all the tumblers from old barrel into new barrel EXACTLY as they were!

Found out that there are tiny springs in the old key barrel that need to be taken out (i used a needle to pick them out) and put in the new barrel before the tumblers.

Dead easy to do after that, just push door handle back in and tighten torx screw on door.

So, after all that, there was no need to take door card off, but now i know!
