Regarding "Urgent - need more help than oxygen"...

My bf (nd) recently wrote a message about my polo:

"Have just been installing a new head unit, changing the bad wiring for a new ISO fitting - have done this a million times - but after running everything up, the engine will no longer fire.

The starter turns the engine over, but it is not catching. My first thought was that i could have blown the fuel pump fuse, but it is fine, and does whir into action when ignition lets power on.

The exact way that this problem is ocuring is that when i rotate the key to ignite, the power seems to go, and the fuel needle drops, while the engine turns over.

I have seen that the ignition key system can be a problem, and will check that tomorrow, but please - any help, let me know!"

We had the AA out who said it was a problem with the distributor but after trying two new ones, my car still will not start.

Someone replied saying that they had exactly the same problem and it turned out to be the starter sytem. Was wondering if anyone else has had this problem from fitting a new HU and what their solutions were??

Am so frustrated so please HELP!!

Cheers,

sorry i can't offer much help but i'm not well up on the mk4, but if the problem occured after fitting the head unit then i would remove it and see if the fault goes. One possability though is a faulty ignition switch. HTH

Yeah, the guy who had the same problem was me! Beleive me, the symptoms you desribe are EXACTLY the same as the ones I had.
When starting, try wiggling the key a bit. It may or may not work, depending on how bad the connection is to the ignition switch.
Get the AA, dealer or whoever to fit a new ignition switch - its the only way too fix it.

As it happens, I had this problem about 2 months after installing a new HU, but i really dont think a new HU is linked to the problem (as long as the HU is wired correctly...)

Hope this helps!!
