just a general question for everyone.....

on the fuel gauge the red starts just after the 1/4 tank mark but it's still in the red, coz it's in the red i always think i have to put fuel in when in reality there's still nearly 1/4 of tank left.

how far into the red can you go ?????

does everyone else feel they have to put fuel in???

yeah i always do, i never let it go into the red. Had a bad experience of running out of fuel - well it wasnt that bad. Had an old metro just to rag around the gravel tracks at my house (live on farmland see), was driving up a hill, and it ran out of petrol. Never worked again.

yeah i try not to let it reach red.... but yeah i think you can travel at least an hour in the red (depending on speed etc etc) but yeh dont let it get to red just incase it conks out

Says in the book that the little orange light comes on when you have only 7 litres left. Which, for me, is roughly 70 miles.

Yeh, top right of the centre bit, where all the other little lights are. Like i say, when that comes on, you have roughly 7 litres left in your tank, which at the moment is about 70 miles for myself.

But i'm fairly sure you'd have a fuel light on yours. My mums old metro even had one! As has my mates Mk3 Golf

yeah your probably right, especially if the mk3 golf has one. When does it come on? half way through the red?

Erm, not sure tbh. Somewhere around there yeah.

I normally fill up as soon as it comes on really. I tend not to trust the gauge and the light and just use the tripometer to see how much juice i should have left. Force of habit from when i had my mini i think.

Being a student n all, i used to live in the red zone. I had a mk2 golf, n it hardly came out of the red, lol. With the polo the fuel light comes one when the needle reaches the 2nd red line. The needle goes right up to the last white line, but if you go to far it will conk out. As said previously you get around 70 miles from when you first get to the red zone.

there's no fuel light on the pre-98 models....

and the pre 98 models get through the red quicker than the post-98 ones do, IMO! I've driven 40+ miles on my 16v post-98 with no problems, but the 8v pre-98 I'm very wary of! No more than 30 miles (but I am conservative!)
