I saw this on ebay last night and it looked like such a good car that I thought if I didn't get in there soon it would be gone..

I noticed AFTER (Doh!!) that he had not filled in whether the V5 doc was present on the ebay selling form so I asked him about it. ( I also asked whether it had tax..) This was his reply..

"Lovely Polo has come to me on a cherished transfer. I have TAXATION slip showing DVLA cherished transfer; and new MOT (completed yesterday); I will complete with you a DVLA new log book form to complete the transaction which will be posted 1st recorded (£19); I will pay this with thanks."


Does this sound alright? There were a few things I have no idea about.. So, he got the polo with a personalised number plate (the one in the pic on ebay doesn't look much like one.). Does he mean that he has the form to get the tax but it shows the old number??
Why would you need to complete a new DVLA log book form? Is this because of the number plate change??

Please, can someone clarify things for me as I'm a bit lost! (I know I should be asking the seller these q's but I can't get in touch with him until after 3pm).

I'd be inclined to ask where the logbook is, and consider not going through with the transaction until one is present. Alternatively, an HPi might be a good plan.

u rushed in2 it a bit 2 quickly (something i do a lot too) Seems like a nice car. If he tries some funny business you always have the police.

Id try and get to the car before u arrange to meet the owner, ie have a good spy at it
Then if its not what you thought you bought - dont actually turn up to meet the guy....

if you want my opinion DONT TRUST HIM FOR s**t till you have EVERYTHING you need and know 100% that its legal

hes clearly NOT english and hence probably could have bought the car from else where and it wont be road legal over here

get it checked via HPi like the chap above said, its a small fee for being safe in mind

No logbook spells trouble, get a HPI check done or alternatively get a Experian (sp) check done at VW, it then becomes "approved used VW" like mine

As its HPI clear he should already have a certificate to state this, but if you're not happy with that get another one done. Judging by his 100% feedback and everyone saying that he's a top bloke, really nice etc etc I'd say he seems genuine...considering he's been trading for a while and is still on ebay. Can't see ebay still having the guy if he's selling ringers.

I can understand all the above etc, I have no idea about the V5 and everything...but from the pictures, comments it seems genuine to me. Get some monkeys to check it over when you pick it up....if you click the reg plate at the top, ebay can supply whether the car is a write off/stolen etc for a small fee.

He does have good feedback, but there is definitely no log book - I would certainly no hand over any cash until you have the log book in your hands.

he's filled in the V5 as present on his other auctions - there isn't one for this car, so he needs to fill in the form (as he mentioned).

you won't be able to tax it without the V5 and MOT and insurance anyway, so I would wait for the new log book to arrive, and then take it from there.

i would do an HPI on the car to make sure it's not stolen, have bought cars in the past with no V5 (not that i would advise this)

Well, first of all thanks to everyone for their replies.
Ok, I went to pick up the car yesterday from Manchester (I live in London). The guy was extremely nice and genuine- the car really was a cherished plate transfer and he had all the DVLA forms re;ating to this. The car had a brand new MOT and although there was a big headache getting the Tax from a post office we went to the local DVLA office and it was sorted! I filled out the new log book form (V62) and he's paying the £19 admin fee, so I should get the log book in about 4 weeks, although knowing the DVLA more like 6 weeks!
Car is really tidy, drove home perfectly, no horrible bumper scuffs that you sometimes see on polo's- full service history and it's black!! Woohoo!
Just need to fit a new stereo, tint the windows and put some clear front indicators on.

Whats that saying again?

- Clear Indicators and side repeaters
- MK5 Red Rear lights £35 each from VW

That should get it looking very smart!!

Nah!! Dont do mk5 rears... way too many ppl have done this.....
Up to you obviously but try something else... (also dont do lexus rears)
