How to increase MPG rate?

Well, I guess this is a stupid question that everybody asks.
Here is the deal: I got my moms 1997 MK4 (AEX).
The mileage is about 90000km (NOT MILES).
I don't know what is the current MPG rate (because my mom never checked it) but I am, as a broke student, interested in the BEST possible rate.
I'll be doing about 70-80 km daily (2/3 of which is in traffic jams)
Also, most of the time I'll be running the AC (yeh, the whether in Israel is HOT).
What is the best rate I can expect and how to improve it (besides driving style)?

If you don't measure it you can't compare......................
So my suggestion is you push it - should get really good mpg then!!!

normally with lots of pulling away manouvers in jams ur mpg will be a lot lower than cruising at 100kmph on an open road so even if its a longer journey to where you go, finding a diff route mite be a good idea,
dunno if it will be true with your car but most modern cars nowadays use ZERO petrol if u leave it in gear and let it roll instead of dipping the clutch.. the momentum of the car is used to turn the engine over

Bstardchild, ofcourse I will measure, but I have to know what is the avarge consumption of such a car and then I'll know whether I have something to improve and how (if anyone will answer)

When you've measured I'll have a starting point for suggestions - but if you are already around 40 mpg (or what ever that is in l/km) you aren't going to see much improvement on a 1.4 AEX so suggestions will be a waste of time

A thing i picked up over the years is to stick it in neutral & let it glide..... I noticed the petrol lasts longer that way, i've no idea why i started doing it just something my ancle once told me to do n been doing it ever since. Dont know if its a good thing or a bad thing.

i roll in neutral as often as possible me! it does save me on petrol quite a bit and it shuts my "Bad boy" exhaust up for a while!!!!
id say best way save petty is jus drive in the lowest gear available to match the speed and use neutral if u like.

Mister D, thanks for the idea, but I WONT drive on a dark blue car on 40C temp. without AC
About using neutral, its a good idea and I do use it.
My question was more about: Try adding XXX to a tank.
Or: Use XXX oil instead of XXX
