Hello all.

I have been offered some original VW G40 Cup Car suspension, the shorter shocks and harder springs. I own a G40 that I am working on as a hobby more than a driver but I do want to drive this eventually and I will defiantely need it by this time next year for a certain event.

I have been informed by some people that even with the very little use my car will recieve, the suspension will be too hard and will eventually tear the chassis apart, perhaps an exageration but either way it sounds as if my car won't like the cup car suspension - crappy english road combination.

Any information / insight / experience will be appreciated. I do not mind so much the ride comfort, I just don't want to destroy my car.

I am due to collect this on saturday or possibly next saturday depending upon arrangments.

Cup Car suspension is obviously designed to work on comparitively smooth race circuits and is VERY stiff as a result. This will put a lot of extra stresses through the standard shell, which it is not designed to take.
For road use suspension must have some compliance, otherwise the ride and handling will be awful. For this reason I can't see any point in fitting the cup car setup, you'll be better off getting a proper sports lowering kit thats intended for road use.

Ok, I see that the G40 cup suspension for road use seems to be a bad idea, I do need some new rear shoks though and the price I am paying for these is very good.

Is the idea of using the cup car rear shocks and the standard G40 fronts I have on the moment a good one or is this an even more stupid idea than the cup car suspension for road use?

like I said on PSD get a set of shocks like koni and they will do the job nicely.

I have recieved some different oppinions, some good, others bad.

I have also recieved methods to overcome certain obstacles with regards to the problems I may have. The two most obvious being big tyres (such as I am currently using) and softer rated springs which are available.

I have decided to buy the kit as I may like to use it on a trackday. This does not mean I will use it constantly. I will of course test the car on the different types of road driving sensibly and I will of course be cautious of bad road conditions, especially whilst testing the car.

The car will be regularly viewed for inspection both mechanically and chassis wise once I have got it on the road which may not be for a while. I may also take the car to AW tracksport to obtain some chassis strengthening products and services.

If I have any doubts surrounding the safety of myself or the car with regards to this suspension on then I shall remove it and seek further advice.

I may keep it only for trackday use and buy some new standard VW springs and shocks for general use. This is a likely possability
