1997 polo help please

Hi all
My gf bought a 1997 1.0 3dr polo 2 yrs ago. It had 19,000 genuine miles and was in immaculate condition. The problem is it hasn't been used very much, and she has only put 8k miles on it in 2 yrs. We are now married, so i have decided to use the car for my daily commute (25miles) to work on alternate weeks.
I had noticed how jumpy and tight the car felt at the beginning (through lack of use) but it is starting to loosen up now, and i do drive it on every now and again, hoping to clear it out a bit.
The idle was also running about 850rpm, but after a few good runs that has now settled to about 650rpm.
Is there anything else i should do or does anyone have any advice on how to get the best out of the car?
Also, is it 45 or 50bhp, and would it be worth considering any small mods which would give it a little more boost, air filter etc??
Thanks in advance
JD
