I think the like sof K&N do replacement elements which fit in the standard air box. This might give you a bit more whizz while keeping it nice and secret.
As for mileage, my little green tank has just tipped the 81,000 mark

Do the ones that go in the standard air box actually do anything? noticably better?
Does the car 'sound' the same with one fitted?
Thanks

The k&n round filters barely offer any performance improvement and certainly the sound is no better as the airbox is still there to provide sound damping. The benefit of the k&n is that it never needs replacing, you just clean it from time to time.
As you said though, you can use k&n's designed for a 1.2 carb nova, probably the easiest way to find them.
The new filter won't damage your engine at all, no need to worry about that. As for mileage, my car has done 95,000 miles and my engine has done about 135,000 miles (replacement engine as I buggered up the last one), and there are people pushing the 200,000 mile mark with their mk2's. It's just a case of regular and thorough maintenance.

142k here, and it's more a case of zero maintenance (might change the oil this year!).

yeah I've got a k&n element in my mk2 and it makes absolutely no difference in a 1L.
I got it off ebay years ago and have probably done 50k miles with it without cleaning. from memory it was listed as being for a Nova.
still it cost me less than £15 new including postage so was cheaper than buying replecement filters.
ohh and my mk2 has about 145k miles on it and has the dirtiest and rustiest engine bay ever.

i think if you're sharing with your grandad it's best not to go putting anything like that in at all... he probably knows the car inside out and would spot it right away when he next does any maintenance and go ballistic...
plus its not an incredibly moral thing to be doing it without asking
save up for your own ride (the 80) instead of spending it on stuff that won't really make a worthwhile performance difference to a 1-litre, but does carry the risk of strife.
