i have a problem i think all u polo nuttas can help me with. i am a lowly student who luvs the dub, my present ride is a mk 3 1.8cl golf (75bhp) its an ace car. not by its standard speck tho. its now lowered on patec coil overs with full poly bushes. handling means all 2 me. the reason 4 me being here is the cars dieing (145k and a bit ragged!). i need advice on the mk 4 1.4 16v, the car of choice 4 replacement, but i cant afford extra mods on it. is the standard suspension worthy of a keen driver and will it take the 16" rims of my golf with 205/45 toyo rubbers on it(4 stud non gti specs)? if it does take the wheels ive stated (OZ superlegs) will it look cack with out lowering?
please save me from buying turd cars like saxos and 106's! i love the dub keep me clean from the polluted french invasion!

much appreciated

me again!

Hi Chubbster, and welcome!

The wheels will actually fit the Mk4 Polo, but the tyres are too big I'm afraid. The correct size would be 195-40-16, anything else and you're garanteed to rub. It won't help the handling either, btw.

To the other question... I'd say it will look bad without lowering. The handling will be a bit better than standard Polo's (since it's a 16v it has a front anti roll bar and perhaps some stiffer shocks) but it's not like having coilovers. If you can stretch it, get the correct tyres and some coilovers, you'll be really happy with the handling then...

Hope this helps!

:)

thanx 4 the "speedy" reply, it does help me greatly. its a shame really the reason 4 me gettin rid of the golf is the rear coils are "severely leaking" according to my local vw dealer(as well as it being old and its on its way back from the moon). ive had the susp kit 4 about 2 years and loved every minute of it. now im abit concerned about using coils again. especially as the company i bought them thro (german car company now german direct) has changed hands or at least changed names so my guarentee is voided. i tried contacting patec in germany and they say theres nothin i can do except buy more rear shocks. so game over 4 the golf and its funky handling, time to move on to something faster and lighter. the tyres on the wheels are about 2 weeks old so i lose everyway i go, the polo cant take the tyres BOO!
sorry bout the moanin but u can c how its been 4 me. the moral of the story 4 me now its try and keep the polo standard. except maybe an airfilter, chip, exhaust, ICE.............. (thanx again speedlaw)

No worries about the moaning, we've all been there. ;)

Perhaps you can sell the tyres, if they're in a good condition. Loads of Golf drivers out there!

On the upside, you're sticking with a brand you obviously enjoy - that's gotta be worth something, eh!
