on a mk4 polo, are the 8v and 16v engine blocks the same? is it just the heads that are different?

how easy would it be to do a 16v head conversion on an 8v? what else would need changing/upgrading etc? would it be a worthwhile conversion?

thanks in advance

i think the 16v has a multi-point injection system - i.e. there is an injector in each cylinder. So you'd need to buy four injectors (plus the ancilliaries, pipes, connections etc). If the injectors are electronic units, you might need a new wiring loom or ECU?

My experience is on heavy duty truck engines - i'm not sure if the same principles apply to a polo.

My old Mk4 was mpi, I believe you can tell by the airbox, if its a round circle 1 its spi if its and sort of oval 1 its mpi, I maybe wrong...........

The engines are different you would need new wiring loom , ecu , gearbox the lot. the blcok just wnt fit.

i know that a 1.6 8v will fit straight on top of the 1.48v with nothing needed to change. :)

i was looking into the same thing ive got a 1.4 8v.. you can pick 1.4 16v engines up on ebay for 300 brick or so but you say you can change the head on the 8v for a 1.6 8v and you wouldnt have to change the wiring loom or anything?

i'm led to believe that the 16v has an aluminium block, where the 8v are iron with an ali head!

with reference to swapping 16v heads and 8v blocks, bear in mind the pistons! my 8v pistons have cutouts for only 2 valves!!

i read in a vw mag that the bottom ends on the 16v are a weak spot; killing both block and crank apparently. might be a cheap source for a head?
