sorry for bein abit thick but i am a newbie to polos, ive noticed in a few posts (not in this section tho) that people with this engine (1.4 16v) have said it is 75 bhp ive also read similar in an old copy of PVW. i want and need the 100bhp engine! is it somethin i should be aware of when buying my minty new mate or are they talkin about other mk's of polos

It's a bit confusing really. The mk4 (up until 2000) had the following engines:
1.0 8v
1.3 8v (until 1996 IIRC)
1.4 8v with 60 bhp
1.4 16v with 100 bhp *commonly known as 16v*
1.6 8v with 75 bhp
The facelift version made from 2000 - 2002 received the 1.4 16v tuned down to 75 hp. It also had the GTI model, with a 1.6 16v engine @ 120/125 bhp.
So to be sure, check with the car's paperwork to find out.

thanx alex, ur really in the know. i'll let u know how the hunt for the polo goes hopefully i'll have 1 in the next week or so. my mates agreed to strip the golf 4 me also which is good news. so i should make about £700 back on it standard and bout £1500+ on all the mods, half the polo!
do u know anythin about chippin? im kinda thinkin of something more of a remap so i dont have to tell the insurance peeps (sssshhhh!) or do u reacon i could get away with a superchip even in a write off situation?
also which is the best drop in air filter replacement without gettin an induction kit?
sorry bout all the Qs, i bet u wished u neva answered me!
16v here i come!

Alex it is also possible to get the facelifted 2000-2002 model with the 1.4 16V 100bhp engine as well as the 1.4 16V 75bhp engine.
If you are definately after a 96-99 mkIV 16V then 'yes' it only comes with the 100bhp engine.
It's a good engine but makes it's power at 6000rpm so you have to make sure you keep the revs up if you want to get anywhere fast

I've got a K&N replacement filter in mine. There are others available for similar money but K&N are generally reckoned to be the best.
I don't know if you plan to do much with it when you get one, but the single best thing you can do is to change the springs & dampers for uprated ones, cos the standard ones aren't up to much

i dont know if u read my first post (HELP! dubster....) but ive had problems recently with a set of coils on my golf. its wrecked my head im kinda hopin the standard set up will do me 4 a year or so till i graduate and get some real cash. i know the benifits of a true system but pllleeeaasssee tell me the standard shocks will make me still luv the car!

One of the problems with the standard setup is it makes the car look like a 4x4

oh my god! maybe i should get a vauxhall frontera instead, it may not have the quality of engineering but at least it can go over slightly wet pebbly roads!
ive seen a few pics of the 16v and its not that bad, are u a touch biased with ur well sorted chassis?!?

chubbster take a look at my car in the members rides section. It's only lowered approx 40mm and I don't think it looks very low so you can imagine what it was like when it was standard.
Don't let this put you off buying one though, they are great cars !. You can always get a suspension kit at a later date.

Np Chubster, here to help. I've just ordered a K&N drop in replacement filter. They claim it's the same or better than stock and better than foam. Oh well... I'll just try and see if it's any good. I've seen mixed opinions on the induction kit (57i K&N), since it's right on top of the engine (which is the hottest place in the engine bay. Therefore, it's crucial you feed the filter with cold (dense) outside air.
JTS - You're right. AFAIK, the 1.4 16v @ 75 and 100 hp were available in the mk5. There was a 1.6 100hp (8v) in Europe too, don't know if it was available in the UK.
Oh, and on chipping - I have no clue about the mad insurance company system in the UK, no one cares over here...
Just the chip won't help a lot, but match it with a sharper cam and filter, then it will.
Good luck with the hunt!

Speedlaws right (again)
a chip is designed to maximise the other mods you have, so a chip on its own probably wont have a great affect, however - after addinf filter, exhaust, cams headwork etc you will notice better gains

ahh lovely polo people! is this the best forum on the web or wot?
i guess my immediate answer is to not bother with any performance mods until i have enough money to do a minor overhaul, also i need to get a 16v first!
it is on the way i promise im not just a dreamer!

just been checkin out the readers rides (is that porn?) and i can c wot u mean Chris about it not lookin slammed, ur cars a beauty (as most of the cars on hear r) and it doesnt need to sweep the road as it passes. ive always been really into modding vw's (2 golfs+1 polo squareback) but with the mk4 i think less=maybe more. im not sure if im just gettin old (or poor) but the way uve took is the way 4 me. chassis mods and the odd interior bit and of course the obligitory exhaust and filter, but unfortuently for now i'll have to keep standard to keep the costs low. at least i can pretend im in the new touareg!
by the way have u checked out tesco's (uk) insurance on standard cars its superb. it beat my student rate endsleigh by £100's! i know a lot of cars here on modded but maybe worth a try?

We try
But you're right - in my opinion at least - that less is definitely more. A couple of low cost mods I'd suggest are the deletion of stuff, not the adding of stuff:
- Delete the stuck on rear badges (except for the VW logo which leaves a dent and therefore requires a respray of the bootlid)
- Delete the stuck on rubbing strips (but be prepared for the odd door ding to show up after a while...)
- Delete the front VW badge (means getting a new grill) or replace it with a black badge (not too expensive - Mk3 Golf items fit 100%)
- Get some delocked handles (--> means getting rear handles from a 4 door Polo/Seat Ibiza)
So with a few inexpensive mods it'll look a bit smoother and you'll still feed that modding crave. If and when funds allow you can get the coilovers you want to drop it on the floor...~!
