How much does mileage matter?

What's everyones opinion on the mileage of the gti's, and does it really matter if it's above average?

I know 10-12,000 is the average but if a car has another 10-15,000 extra does that really matter?

For example i've seen a gti with 76,000 (registered in 2000) with all the trimmings including leather interior and sunroof. It's for sale at £4995. I'm tempted but have to say the mileage puts me off.

Well look at what mileage means, if the car has low mileage it means that all of the parts have been used less and the chances of wear and tear is less. But this is not the only factor, just because a car has been driven more does not mean that it is definatly going to be in better condtion. I drove a GTi with 14k on the clock and it drove like a bag of s**t, whereas mine has 46 on the clock and it drives beautifully.

Buyin high mileage is a gamble and one of the risks is that you wont be able to sell the car on when your done with it. Chances are it will have 100k on when you go to sell it in a year or 2 and people might be put off.

Thats very high mileage for the cost. Mine had 46k on it and cost less then that. So be careful.

Personally id wait and get one with lowermileage for a bit more.

I bought my GTi nearly three years ago and got it around £1000 cheaper than others because of it's mileage. It was just under two years old when i bought it and it had 46,000 on the clock. The way i looked at it was that it had over a year left on warrenty, so if anything went wrong it would get done under warrenty, and because we have two cars i was only looking at putting around 7-8000 a year onto the car so when i got rid of it after around 5 years, (car loan was 5 years), it would have around 85-90,000 on the clock but be around 7 years old, and so back to average mileage..... So i payed less for the car but should get normal market value when selling it on.

Now the down side is that if there is no warrenty there's a bit of a risk..... Mine has turned out to be one of those talked about 'unlucky' GTi's and has had around £2-3000 of warrenty work done...... But of course this could have been the case anyway and not just because of the mileage.

I also looked into the cars history regarding servicing.... The reason the mileage was high was because it was a company car but it has had a full VW service history. I also spoke to numerous workmates etc... who had owned VW's and all of whom said that they'd had high mileage VW's with no probs. One of whom who'd had a Passat that had topped 175,000!!!!!

Lastly when i was looking around for the car quite a few dealers said that anything upto 20,000 miles a year is classed as average mileage these days as long as the car has been serviced regurlarly.

I think it really comes down to each car individually and as has been said above just because a car has low miles on the clock it doesn't mean to say it's gonna be a good 'un.

Cheers

Dave.

silver is the best colour!

Pretty undecided on this one. Have to say i'm not too bothered about the leather trim and heated seats, although sun roof would be nice. I guess the mileage is a factor for me as i always think about the re-sale value. No idea how long i'd keep the car for but after a couple of years it'd be over the 100 mark and worth a lot less. Plus there is the concern that once it gets that far things start to go (in my experience anyway).

I want a black one........ I really really want a black one

But I also want 3 door, AC and heated leather - sunroof not fussed and any other toys are a bonus

So it gonna be a long search.......

I like silver and I'm OK with red but the better half has some opinion and some influence

- doesn't want a red one for sure

- doesn't want a silver one either (working on it but it's pretty tough going!!!) and haven't given up yet

PS - Actually I want a white one but as they didn't I'll have to settle for the negative of white.......

And either convince the better half of silver better than black or wait!!

You're like me - i want silver, 3-door, climate, decent mileage and anything else a bonus.

And its gotta be sleek silver or nothing for me!

when i bought my gti a few months ago, it had almost 44k miles on the clock (its a 2000, i paid £5300, i thought that was ok compaired to the prices of some others! )

i also went thru a phase of really wantin a red one (had the chance but no cash at the time) :(

then i saw a black one so i really really wanted it but it was over 100 miles away and i wasnt prepared to travel that far!

then i saw some great pics of a silver one! (not the one i bought) which pulled my arm into gettin a silver one!

luckily i refreshed the autotrader page and a silver one appeared not far from me and i just had to get it!! :D
