Knackered Gearbox - Now What?

Hey, Just been down to local vw garage in leics who have just told me my gearbox is knackered and needs replacing. Quoted me near to £2000 for parts and fitting. Pretty damn annoyed as i took it down last week and they said that the whining noise the gearbox was making is just normal for cars of my age (Y REG, done 34000 miles, pretty mint condition)

I am refusing to pay £2000, so what other options do i have?

Any help would be appreciated.

Martin

My general plan is going to be to get my hands on another gearbox and then have it fitted elsewhere.

Seems like a good plan

Considered an exchange box?

Think there are some big companies advertising in the back of Exchange and Mart that do that sort of thing

Exchange box sounds a good idea, I will look into that tomorrow. Any rough ideas of costs?

Also anymore ideas of where i can get a gearbox from? non VW universal box maybe?

not a clue long time since I needed to replace one.......

Last gearbox I had replaced was in a M*tro Van and it was £200 exchange and fitted

I'd guess but don't shoot me that it will be about £500 plus fitting

I got hte same problem. the whining sound is worst in 3rd and 4th gear. ive asked about and it seems the best idea is to look in exchange and mart and either get my box reconditioned or exchange it for a reconditioned or new box. probly about 200- 400 squid. 33500 miles on clock. is this a common problem for polos. :(

my problem was caused by my 17s :( Big wheels +lowering = lots of gearbox pressure, unless you get new drive shafts

anywho, got mine done over last weekend, went in thursday and got it back tuesday morning

cost me £500 in the end, inc recovery, parts labour etc

my gearbox was £180, 2nd hand casing but brand new refurbed interior, they took my old one as part of the price, not sure how much it would have been without p/x

my whining was also worst in 3rd and 4th, you will eventually find that it will just lock up and go no where, if neutral becomes stiff and you find it hard to get in gear keep it in neutral else it wont move lol

Right got gearbox from breakers yard, off a 6n2 write off, only done 25000 miles. cost me £150, coming tomorrow and then getting fitted mid week, so hasnt turned out as expensive as i thought. Just hope it turns out all good.

Have you considered a second opinion?
