bought 1 today!
after a load of hassle trying to find me a lift to blackpool (2 hours away from me) i bought a nice 98' 16v with 29300 on it, in a darkish metallic blue. i didnt know it'd be like this! its a fast little beast! on the way back i was dogging an s3 (through fast dual carriage way and reasonable traffic) i know he'd have the 16v on a clear road but it wasnt half p***ing him off seeing the VW badge always catching him after his sprints. i thought the 0-60 was about 10.5 seconds, i saw it on parkers online. i was shocked when i test drove it. the sprint time must be in the 9's maybe if u dump the clutch at 3000 rpm in the high 8's! i saw a post saying this and thought its someone who loves there car and believes it to be faster than it is. the thing is its true!
tonight ive missed my night out with the lads to sample more of the car. there have been many times tonight when a car has been behind me at the lights and ive accelarated lightly to get them interested, wait till they think its just a polo and sit up my ass and then stomp down and show them a clean pair of heels!
on a dual carriage way a megane (dont no its spec) and an old 325 BM were racing so i joined in. the megane was soon lost. at the lights i span the wheels and lost tenths of a second so the BM was off. the polo managed to stay a car length behind it until the next lights which was over 1 km away!
an engine half the size can do that! i know its half the car but christ whats the power of a 325!

i had no idea they were this good. my mates got a performance timer and im goin to do some figures for it.
i guess u all know how good it is, but when i came on this site this was the kind of information i wanted and it could help new buyers. sorry 4 boring u all

VW's (or at least Polo's) are often quicker than their spec would have you expect. I know of one AEE engine that has 89hp (measured) with zero mods. It's rated @ 75!

I was well surprised when I got mine 2. Get yourself a good exhaust and de-cat pipe and you'll see 115bhp at least, mine did 121bhp last time and stays with my mates Mk1 Golf 1.8 16v on carbs, he wasnt happy!

wot a beauty!!! im going to get some head work done on it in a few months see wot it can do then. i dont think im goin to bother doing the s/s exhaust my last car had a peco and im enjoying the quiet speed!
i'll let u know the price and power, the fella does graphs before and after. should be interesting.

did i almost break the rules? or was it the de cat pipe thing?
shouldnt really mention the cars top speed , it seems to be conservative like the horsepower!

Hey chubbster glad to hear you found yourself a 16V and you're pleased with it.
Sounds like you got Indigo Blue which is one of my favourite colours.

They are quick little cars for 1.4's if you don't let the revs drop too much.

How are you finding the handling ?

i love the standard suspension! i know what you mean about it looking like an off roader, but it gives such a smooth pleasent ride. i know im starting to sound like a granny, but after a 65mm slam in my golf its nice to drive a car without needing an emergancy phone number for my dentist stuck on the dash to replace swallowed fillings!
it actually handles really well, it may not take the fast motorway bends as well but over our cruddy B roads it feels more confidence inspiring. it is less involving than coils but for now i think the trade off suits me fine.
im having an internal battle between how id like the car to look and the depth of my pockets. at the moment my pockets have almost sealed themselves up. ive managed to get a shorter bee sting and a set of xtreme force bulbs, which should be here tommorow from demon tweeks. i hope the bulbs are worth it £90 with VAT+delivery! there ment to give a blueish reflection even when lights are of and a cool blue when on, smart!
compliments the cars colour, which i also think is gorgeous. i would show you in members rides but im to much of a computer cripple to do it!

If you are not worried about the ride height then it may be worth investing in some uprated dampers in the future to use with the standard springs which I'm sure would improve the handling without sacraficing the ride quality.
My experience with VW's is that they are usually underdamped.

will the uprated dampers need any specialist treatment?
ive recently had coils fail on me+have been in a state of "shock" since. apparently some coils need servicing, which i never knew. unfortuently on the coils i bought all the instructions were all in german so if it said about maintenance i obviously missed it. (sorry to keep harping on about this, but oh my god...)
so now im after hassle free modding......if thats possible!

and on the bulbs ive bought, i think possibly a waste of money. the colour they give is nice but maybe not classy enough for a VW, there abit nova crew. should of spent it on tyres!!!

But AFAIK, normal (or even uprated gas filled) shocks do not require any servicing, unless they're bust.

AFAIK uprated gas dampers require no maintenance because they are a sealed unit. When they eventually wear out you just throw them away and buy some new ones. Dampers are normally expected to have a good useful life of approx 30-40K miles.

Koni dampers are usually rated as one of the best for VW's. They have adjustable damping too, they are also very expensive.

I bought a set of 4 GMAX non adjustable uprated dampers for about £130, they are ok, definately better than standard. If I was in the position of needing new dampers now for reasonable money I think I would get BOGE.
