was driving today, in traffic and steam started coming out of bonet, i pulled in where i could and there was no coolant in the tank and lots all over engine bay. brakedown cover man came out and said that my gauge doesnt work properly and that the fan isnt kicking in. he bodged the fan on so it was always on for the journey home. went past a motor spares so i got the sensor for the radiator fan, and now it comes on.
just before the fan comes on the coolant overflows from the tank, then the fan comes on and it stopes coming out after a few seconds.
took the top off the tank and there is nothing in it so i top it back up with water and try again and it does the same thing, comes out just before fan comes in.
i think that the mixture of coolant is very weak, but i dont want to fill it up if its going to p*** back out.
any ideas whats happening?

Sounds like the fan's coming on too late and the water's boiling over before it has a chance to cool it. In which case, I'd say you've bought another duff sensor.
