Hi,

I bought a S Reg 1999, Polo 1.4L about 7 months ago and it came with 2 keys, unfortunatly i've lost my spare one and currently only have one on me!

I went to a couple of key locksmiths and they told me that it has a chip inside which is programmed and can't be duplicated.

I tried many places and they all gave ago in their machinces but it just doesnt copy it.

At one locksmith, he copied the key but when you turn the car on the engine comes on but turns off again so it wasnt done.

My final option will be the VW people but i know if i walk in there they will charge more then £100 + VAT, just for a key! but then again i know if i lose this one then i will have to pay £400 for another one according to people.

Anyway if anyone know or have any ideas what should i do then please let me know as it wpuld be a great help! I live in north london!

Im in the same situation mate. Ive been told, the thing with VW keys is that there is a rotating cryto, meaning the code of the chip always rotates when u start, so it cant be copied. It has to be programmed to the car via VAG-COM which a specialist could do too, as well as Vdub. Im in North London too and ive heard there are some about.

VW told me £50 for key cut, and then about £60 to programme it.
£110 for a key! lol

just thinking actually.........

i had a customer who had a corsa who wanted remote start on his car.

without putiing key into his ignition, it would not start due to the chip in the key.

i got his key with the transponder (chip),stuck it to this box behind the dash..... which dissabled the cars immobiliser,as the signals from the key were constantly going to the box.

then all we did was get a cheap 3-4 quid key cut off the market and used that one if things ever went wrong.

would the polo immobilser work the same? id try it, but mines a 96 N-reg, so i dont have transponder inside the key.

Bloody clever............ Thinking out side the box - does make it a bit easier to steal but everything in life is a risk!!

you could always cut the blade off the key too.......

if your cars got an alarm/immobiliser, it should be ok....

I only had one key and took it to the local TIMPSONS key cutters and they had to order a blank and they copied the chip and cut key and it works fine. Cost me £30.

£30, when where and how!!!! Was it a MKIV key? I need one and i'm getting all sweaty about paying over £100 for a darn key!

Yes £30, have you every heard of a key cutting company called Timpson, dont know if they have one in your area and it works fine in my 1996 Polo SE, It not a genuine VW blank (the blank has HD written on it) and they had to order it in specially but cost £30 inc cutting.

FYI

pre-98 models had no immobiliser. no chip in the key. basically the models with the old style dash.

I'm amazed timpsons could copy and reprogram another transponder in a blank key? a car audio security place might be able to copy the code into a transponder for you. best to ring around.

edit: i see his was a 1996 model - it doesn't have the transponder so the timpsons thing won't work - they didn't have to reprogram anything. unless i am missing something and you managed to get a vw immobiliser fitted by the factory?

but I like mitch's idea the best - stick the top half of the key in your steering column somewhere, then just get another key cut. top notch that man!

That would mean that there is no immobaliser. This could nulify your insurence.
