right so yeah its always been a bit notchy but now its getting serious

the last couple of weeks have been a chore.

reverse is a nightmare to get into without the biggest disturbing whinning grind! its as if the reverse gear is spinning like mad and im stopping it when im engaging reverse! sounds/feels terrible! when it does engage it 'jolts' into place!

then theres first, second, third and fith! 4th is always fine?
just so notchy!!! first is actually a joke to engae at roundabouts (stationary or moving) sometimes i cant actually get the car into gear for a good few seconds!

im going to have to take it to the dealers.

any ideas/encouraging words appriciated!

regards
gareth

Did you read the clutch thread? Mk5/GTi?

Try spinning the adjuster round on the end of the clutch cable, RHD cars are not self adjusting. Also note that it sounds like your clutch is not disengaging which makes it very difficult to get gears particularly 1st and reverse. Try two turns, then see then another two.

What you need to do is effectively shorten the cable, which means it has got to turn clockwise (from the front of the car).

If you see the picture, it looks like there are two locking nuts that need to unlocked with two spaners then wind the whole assembly on a bit more.

You need to do this because if not, you might find that the gearbox will be damaged beyond the point where it will make any difference. Only reverse should crunch. If the other ones feel like a spoon into a bucket full of marbles, its likely that the clutch is not dissengaging properly, you will not really notice it much throughout the gear range as you can change without the clutch because the speeds are quite well matched.

Just wanted to check what other peoples gear changes are like? My pedal box has been replaced and i had a new clutch at the end of last year but the gear changing still isn't great. Seems very 'clunky', especially between 2nd and 3rd. Is this normal or how can i remedy it?
