ok people, iv finally decided on the alloys that im gona get.195/40/16 7j 4x100(stud) with an offset of 38.iv had no lowering done on the car.my car is a 6n 1997 1.4cl.now the main question will these fit ok? by the way iv done the measuments and if i get these new sets of alloys then the original wheel size would have increased by 50mm. some guy at halfolds told me that if the new alloys are balanced and put on the car properly then my speedo should jus reset itself to suit the new size.is this true?

your new combo compared to a 185x55x14 size is almost exactly the same diameter - there's about 10mm difference in circumference - about 2mm in radius.


I'm guessing you mean that your current wheels are 5inch wide? so the new 7 inch ones will be 50mm wider? true, but the tyre width is the main thing (providing you don't have a stupid offset or more than 7 inch wheels) and that's probably only 20mm wider than what you have now.

Basically - you'll be fine, no worries whatsoever. you should be able to lower it 60mm without any problems too.

Whoever told you that should be burnt at the stake, or at least fired. report him!

my old tyres are 165/65/13 (i think,car is in car park and im in lesson,lol) my new wheels are 195/40/16. the height has increased by 50mm. yeh the new alloys are 7J. im well badly lookin forward to puttin them on. i think they will look toooooo nice.

use that. you have too small tyres on your car at the moment anyway! 165's on a mk4 should be 70 profile. the 185x15x14 is the best measure of the right tyre size IMO.

anyhow, if you put your figures into that converter the circumference is 50mm more, but that's not the height. diveide by pi to get the diameter. and it's 16mm.

i was thinkin while on teh bog 2day, changin the size of ur wheels should make the speedo be wrong, unless its got sumkind of momentom contraption. how can u make the speedo correct afta change in wheels size? oh yeah and i was wonderin which number is teh profile eg. 195/50/15 is it the 50? im guessin these measurements are in mm. coz when i get my new wheels i wanna get sum quite low pro tyres so i can slam it. otherwise it will look like a tractor lol

when you change the wheel size, you change the tyre size to suit, so a bigger wheel has a thinner tyre to make the overall size the same as the original. hence the speedo will read the same.

the profile is the depth of the tyre as you look side-on (sidewall). it is the second number - so the 50 in your case.

it's a percentage of the width of the tyre. so a wider tyre with the same profile as a thinner tyre will actually have a deeper sidewall than the thinner tyre!

basically, when you change the wheel size, get the right tyre size to make the overall size the same as the OEM wheel-tyre combo.

blergh, ok thanks. atm i have 13" alloys with HUGE profile tyres, and they look kinda stupid, i will have to check 2 c if the ratio will b the same so the speedo will b ok.

Ahh man... never listen to anyone who works in halfords. Ive got a couple of mates that work there, and they dont really know s**t about cars, even though they work in the parts/installation section.
