Hi am new to site, have S reg polo which i just put some 15 inch tsw alloys on dead chuffed will post pics at a later date.

Can anyone help me my car keeps cutting out on most occasions when i put the clutch down.

So if i am about to turn or stop and i am not reving it just cuts out its very embarrasing as most of the time i havent got space to do quick bump start so nobody notices and have to restart it and looks like i have stalled.

I changed my rotary arm as that was completly shot to pieces and replaced a pipe into engine but no good. i'm hearing alot about a throttle body and cleaning it? can anybody tell me if they think that will fix it?

I am having exactly the same problem at the moment, so I totally understand how annoying and dangerous it is. Mine has gotten even worse the last couple of days, so much so that everytime I shift into 1st gear the engine seems to die.

Earlier tonight I bought a can of Carb Cleaner for £3.99, popped off my air filter, put a brick on my accelerator pedal and gave a good spray down the throttle body. I went for a 10 minute drive and the stalling problem seemed a little better, however i've gotta drive to work and back tomorrow and that'll be the real test so i'll post an update tomorrow - but first thing you should do is try the carb cleaner route.

If my problem persists i'm gonna change the spark plugs and leads and if it carrys on after that - i'm gonna take it to the garage

I'm totally useless so don't expect miracles from me...

What's it idling at mate when you first start it ? Just for my own reference!

Its fine on motorway but when i get into bristol going to be a night mare

My sparks plugs looked fine so its not them unfortunatly, i can see this is going to be a trip to the garage (great more money to be spent lol)

Its rpm is about 8000 when idle dont know if that is too low? anybody?

my mate had the same problem in his mrk4 golf all he done was got the throttle body cleand n that fixed it

i have a thread on this in the mkV section, cleaning your throttle body usually does the trick

Well i'm at work at the minute and managed to get here pretty easily this morning, so it looks like the carb cleaner did the trick.

When I get back from work this afternoon i'm gonna give the throttle body another good squirt and proper clean. You should totally do the same since it seems to make a massive difference.

I was SO sure my clutch was f****d, its amazing how the throttle body has such a drastic effect on the drivability of a car.

Good to hear you got there ok, get yourself to a little autoshop and grab some carb cleaner, should perk up after the first squirt!

I used http://www.imageshack.us to upload pictures too, then I copy the "direct link to image" part into my profile signature bit and stick img tags around it.

So for example:

Mine has had the same problem for ages. Sprayed some carb cleaner in there, and wiped it with a cloth, got it shiny again(it was filthy), no cutting out now, and it idle's slightly higher! ACE

Back home now and at work lol bought some carb cleaner today just sprayed some in wasnt sure how much so gave it a mighty soak so fingers crossed on outcome i will let u know tomorrow

First of all: Buy a Haynes manual! People say it all the time, whatever, but it will seriously save you tonnes of cash, effort and time. Plus you'll learn about your car which is f*cking handy.

Secondly: Here's some pictures to help you find the throttle body:





This is what the throttle body looks like:



You want to spray carb cleaner down that 'hole' (blue arrows).

When I cleaned mine I used an old toothbrush and got rid of TONNES of sh*t. Just be careful not to damage anything by scrubbing too hard or using some dodgy cleaning product.

Basically a squirt of carb cleaner should help tonnes.
