Has it been sitting unused for any amount of time?
Have you tried charging the battery? Cold weather aint good for batteries

What kind of keys do you have? as in does it have an immobiliser?
Happened on mine would turn over then the revs dropped and engine cut out.
Turned out there was a problem with the key. Had keys reprogramed it was fine again.
Dino that pic of your engine bay, is fantastic!

nah it was only sitting around for a day yesterday. The battery in it was good. I think it may be the imobiliser. The key does need to be programmed so it does have an imobiliser. Do you need the car and key to get them re-coded at VW??

You need the car and all the keys, apartently they have to do it 'online' from the workshop, and it can take upto half an hour!
Did you try the other keys?
My dials also flashed up some lights, if i remember.

Just found out today, after a week that it is the timing that has slipped. Never heard of this as its chain not a belt. Just waiting to get a cost - not looking forward to it tho
