Engine (emissions?) light on my 9n

Hi, bought my first polo, a 1.2 9N, a couple of months ago with about 24k on the clock, it's been running like a dream until tonight when on the way home from work just as I accellerated onto the dual carraigeway, the revs dropped off suddenly as I got about half way through the rev range in 2nd, and again in 3rd & the engine (emissions?) light began to flash orange, then after a minute or so it came on steadily. Pulled off the d/c a mile or two later at the first place I could stop and the idle was chugging like a tractor (well, more than it does normally anyway) with the whole car shaking from the vibrations, although if I fed in a little accellerator (to 1000) then it all settled down, but the light stayed on. Limped home with it taking quite a while to spin up enough to move smoothly from idle every time I stopped at lights etc.
The book says it's to do with emissions & to take it to the dealer, but I don't see how that could be making it chug like that & not pull etc. Any suggestions (other than book it in to VW of course!)?

Miss firing. Could be a simple coil pack replacement.... could be something else (can't remember what i'd had replaced under similar symptoms).
If it's under warranty then obviously vw will fix it for free.

Thanks for that. Unfortunately it's just gone out of the warranty
Will my local repair blokey be able to check it out, or do I really need VW do you think?

hey, its one of your ignition coils which have packed in. This is a common problem. You are now better replacing all of them (about £25 a go and theres three) and then you will also need the ECU re-set.

yeh sounds definatly like the coil pack. happened to mine twice.
vw told me when the polo was first made, the coils were known for breaking down. then they replaced mine with 'updated' ones they had brought out, and touch wood, no problems yet

forgot to mentoin this to you mate. Although your car is out of warranty, VW will still replace the coils free of charge (as it is a recognised problem of this engine, they have extended the warranty o 5years).
Just incase you go elsewhere and end up paying about £120 to get it done when you will get it done for free!!!!!

Thanks all, calling VW now, will let you know how I get on.
Many thanks for the tip-off that it should be warrantied, very useful to know that when the 3yrs was up in September!

Well, it's booked in with them for tomorrow. They made no comment about what it might be etc etc, just a service receptionist. Would never buy from that dealer though, I didn't even like them when I was looking to buy a new car as they always gave the distinct impression that I should be grateful that they were finding the time to deal with me (ended up buying a new Saab 9-3 instead of the Golf I was looking at)!

thats good to know! not sure if all 3 of mine have been replaced. suppose if another ones goes i am covered...i hope!
they did recognise the fault and release a new style coil pack which didnt fail!

And the good news is the Dealer rang me within an hour of the car being delivered to them to say it was the coil, and it's been replaced under warranty, no charge sir.
So they'll definately be getting it in a few weeks time when it needs it's 30k service!
