Tracking problems and where to cure them

Hey,
I recently had my car dropped 50mm all round and have noticed that the handling has deteriorated noticably. Ontop of this, Bstrdchild suggested I get my tracking checked over anyway. It currently feels like i'm driving on ice all the time, so something is obviously wrong.
I've been to three garages (charlie browns, tyrespot and a local garage) and NONE of them would take the car, claiming that it was "too low to fit the gauges to".
Finally I took it to a third garage (a different branch of Tyrespot) and they said they would be able to fit the gauges but they would only be able to reset the tracking to "the standard VW settings. NO GUARANTEES".
Its going to cost £17 to get the tracking checked and anything over £40 to get the fronts tracked properly after that. Should I go ahead and get the fronts returned to the "VW standard settings" or is there another way round this?
