I think it was the very early W-reg ones that had the all red GTi badge. Mine is a March 2000 model and has the badge with the red i.

^^really, its very old, and looks like its never been replaced, there is no polo badge either, and looking at the paint there has never been one there

I'm sure I've seen a pic of one with the all red badge, but even if you go to VW and ask for a GTi badge, you'll get the chrome and red one without asking for it specifically, so that must be what it should have.

Who VW? When I went in to ask for 2 new GTi badges (a front and rear one) I didn't tell them it was the red and chrome one, but that's what I got.
I stuck one on the engine cover after seeing Moynas (I think) engine bay.
*EDIT* I just dug out my invoice and found out that from VW the grille badge (6N0853679FKTP) is £6.38 + VAT (£7.50 including VAT) and the rear badge (1J0853675AHGQF) is £9.45 + VAT (£11.10)
