if you had to brake sharply wouldn't the back end rise up like a seesaw with the wheels being almost in the middle?

That vision made me laugh, I can picture that - approaching the traffic lights, sh!t! Red Light and you end up on your head.

In the mid-1980s there was a three-wheeled VW prototype called Scooter. I think that was back in 1985 or '86. It had a proper roof though, and if my memory isn't playing any tricks on me, I think it had gullwing doors.
I'll try to dig up a photo.
