hey all, first time I've been here for over a year. Joined up when UK-Mkivs was getting upgraded but now I'm the proud owner of a 96 (P) Polo cl 1.9 D 5 door.
Got it really as a run about for the commute to work etc, trying to keep the miles off the R32.
Picked it up on the 27th December and am already thinking about mods for it. probably only cosmetic and some handling mods but that is par for the course eh
Anyway it is the sort of purple colour (don't know what it is called sorry

) and I'm really liking it. Came from a 205 d so it is a big step forward.
So where to start, it's completely standard at the moment so god knows. I obviously want some wheels, sort the handling and ride height but not too low becase it's gonna have to put up with my mountain bikes and camping gear. Also it needs to be done pretty cheaply as I spend too much money on running the R32 and upgrading my MTB.
thanks for listening
Alan

oh yeah one thing I've noticed that is strange is some severe vibration at idle, disapears as soon as the revs start to rise.
Does anyone have any experience with this problem?
Is it an engine mount?

I had this on my Polo turned out to be the HT leads arping as they were split.......

I see you've already decided to lower it & slam some alloys on it so thats good... and if your doing it on a budget also put some clear indicators and repeaters just to give it that facelift illusion so people dont confuse you for an old lady driver... maybe a de-badge grille? and thats it your done!
Oh and welcome to the forum, hope u enjoy ur stay

cheers for the welcome,
what do you mean by the HT leads arping? and how can you tell they are doing that?
What is the PCD and offset needed for wheels?
I'm thinking about a set of Revolution style 5 spokes and a bit lower, what do you guys do in the way of anti roll bars etc. What online retailers are the best for Polo parts?
Sorry for all the questions but if you don't ask.
Love my R32 but it is a pretty expensive toy. haven't done any performace mods to it but want to supercharge it once the warranty is up

I not expect on engines, so I dont know if this will apply to a diesal engine, however the HT leads are the leads which travel to the sparkplugs and fire the cyclinders.
One of the lead on mine was split which ment the spark was coming out of the cable and not firing the cyclinder.
VW Care used the term arping for this, anyway the systoms was engine vibration at idle and loss of power.
Was fixed by replacing the cable.

ah I'm getting you now, I knew what the lead was but wasn't sure about the "arping" bit. I think maybe what the VW Care person meant was "arcing"neg the spark was arcing between the lead and another part of the engine/car somewhere it shouldn't have been.
I'll check it out but do diesels not just give a constant supply to the glow plugs. I maybe being stupid but thats what I thought happens.

yeah, it's a different ignition system. you were probably right about the mounts, see if they're worn or perished. it may just be the diesel noise tho!
