This poxy 'engine check light' for emissions...

Hello Members
I'm f***ing fed up!, how is it possible that when this blasted emissions light comes on, stays on for a few days, then goes off, again, for a few days, with VW telling me they can find nothing wronge, a number of times.

Surely!, the lights coming on for a reason, and it's ment to be there to tell a VW mechanic whats wrong, otherwise whats the point of the bloody thing.

Trouble is, mechanic's play with your money, and are prepared to "change and chance", that is, they say the blah! blah! part needs changing, and take the chance that it'll fix the problem, only to then find it hasn't , "there goes another wedge of my hard earned".

So this leads me to the question, for example, you find in businesses that have comercial equipment, which suffer from these kinds of intermittent faults, that the company that do there servicing will always have degrees of 'specialist' engineers, they will progressively go up a level of engineer, until the problem is diagnosed and repaired, you will then be charged for parts and labor, but the cost is not increased because the service company needed to use one of there star engineers, well.....

..thats what i'm looking for, in London, a VW service center that knows the problem or has encounted it, and knows what to do about it, or, will at-least make enquieries to other VW dealers, or direct to the manufacturer if needs be (YES! to Germany if he/she has to) before any or every part is changed, which needn`t of been, does this place exist?

I search the net for clues to this problem, and read many other forum's threads with these exact same issues as mine (VW polo 1.4E Auto 'x'reg), so there is a common fault, what is it though? does anyone out-there know/, what sorted it for you?, please let me know.

Knid regards
Livio

Thanks laura, so i read the thread you pointed to, is my understanding of it correct, when this engine 'check' light is on, after 5 restarts, it will turn off regardless of when the restarts are done (one day to the next), so in other words, when i think that this light has now gone out, because the problem might of gone, it may of not stopped having the problem, but that only this 'check' light is reset.

If that's the way the system works, what a naff way of doing things, it'd be better if the light stayed on, until the problem was solved, and then the light would turn off.

I was under the impression that the light only goes out, once the problem has stopped happening after five restarts, i.e. it goes out once all is fine again - does not mean the problem is fixed as such, esp. if it comes back on again

Fault code will be logged in the ECU until cleared - so you might be able to narrow the issue down, if car is scanned

thanks inder, is there always a recorded 'fault code' for anything that goes wrong in the engine, or to do with it's running, or is this engine 'check' light totally independant?

Hi, not sure if its digressing too much but here goes....
Just had a hell of a job with vdub dealership to clear a light-turned out to be a lambda sensor in the end but they charged £330 to fix!!!!
£100 of this was a diagnostic, so they reckon-It just recently passed the mot test :?:
My mate said that he could have done the job for £150-£170 and he owns a performance cars garage!
(I managed to claim £100 back off them as i showed them a quote for a couple different companes to do the work)
The moral of this little story is-Definately get a second opinion from somewhere whatever you do-they will fix the problem and you will save money!

laura, thats the same sort of answer i got, every time, "we carn't find whats causing it to happen", "another 80 quid please", are they even looking in the wright place, and can they be even bothered, i ask myself.

Hello Terence, what really takes the p*ss, is like, changing these 'Lambda' units are like changing a spark plug, and disconnecting a couple of wires, it's probably 5 minuets work, and hardly any effort, but at least it solved the problem for you.

I think garages should work on the same principle as these accident claim firms, you know, no win NO FEE!, in other words, you bring your car to the dealer with a single specific problem (they take your log book, but give you a special dealer copy, they look at the car, they repair the fault, they then present you with a 30 day payment invoice, and if your then satisfied that the fault has been removed, and that no new faults have presented themselves in direct relation to the work carried out, you then pay, you get a 'paid' receipt and your log book back, and the dealer takes the 'log book' copy back.....great eh!

time to wake up........i must be dreaming
