Electric window woes!!

When we got our 6n polo (1998) the passanger window didn't operate properly. A gentle whack on the door and all worked fine (probably sticky motor)

Thats worked fine for the past 3 months, but today my wife puts the window down and then it wouldn't go back up properly.

I cam and had a look, and instead of the motor not working, it was jammed. Took the door panel off and it seems as if the steel cable bit that goes inside the motor / winder is breaking up (makes a creaking cracking noise as you try to wind the window up and down)

I managed to get the window up in the end with a bit of 'gentle' persuasion, but although the motor is trying to go, it sounds like that cable is jamming. I've disconnected the motor so that the wife can accidently use the window for now.

Has anyone had this prob before, is there an easy fix (can the mechanism be taken apart?)

If worst comes to the worst i'll stick some new bits on. Had a look on GSF and they don't look too bad:

Should i try the mechanism first? (87330) ELECTRIC WINDER MECH LH PO 95> 2-Door 68.00

Or will i have to get the motor as well? (cant see that listed)

Cheers
