GTI Lower grilles question

Hi
i feel abit stupid asking this one
but.....
am i right in thinking the centre/lower grille (level with the foglights) is different on the GTI, being see-through honeycomb and not just molded plastic? like on my 1 litre

The middle bit has the honeycomb holes cut out yeah, but the foglight ones don't

My centre honeycomb is cut out, but my left hand side ( if looking at the car from the front) is solid around the fog light. On the other fog light the outer edge is solid, but the other side is cut out. Is this where the cold air feed comes in for the air filter.

Mine are honeycomb everywhere apart from where the foglights are located:
Any help - what's different exactly on yours?

one side is cut-out other is solid wtf?

yep its part of the cooling system for a bit in the gti that is low down in that corner
