my mk 4 keeps making a clunking noise when going slow/in lower gears.it seems to be coming from under the gearbox,or around that area. have had it checked out by the garage but they couldnt find anything,as the noise had stopped.

Do you think it's affected by road conditions? I mean, holes, dips, etc.? It could be the stabiliser hitting the car, but this happens on low cars that actually have stabilisers only, i.e. from 75hp onwards, and diesels too IIRC. No known cure, other than modding the stabi or raising the car...

sounds like the problem harry had when he lowered his - the anti roll bar hitting the hub. if the cars lowered try raising it a fraction

any idea which side it's coming from?? check the geomatry it may be riding uneven if it's lowered, if you take the front tyres of check if any marks in the arches at the bottom of the arch where the anti roll bar is where something might be touching/hitting.

Hey all.
I have just purchased a used N reg 1.4. 1L polo. (1996 AFAIK)
I get this clunking noise too... I seems like it is coming from the chair as you can feel the vibrations the best there (oooer

).
If the car hasnt been lowered - could it be anything else?

Hey M,
*Welcome*
If the clunking is coming from the chair, a faulty seat base could be the problem. The gliders have plastic caps on them, and they could be either missing or broken. Other than that, check the front side mount of the seat - it's where the handle is to move them back and forth. It is held in place with a small screw + nut, and they could be loose.

Yeah that could very well be the problem, it's common with non-OE boxes, but it can happen if the normal isn't fitted properly.
Glad you know what the problem is.
