just got back from uni, was just going on my way home, and all off a sudden when changing from 2nd gear to 3rd, i hear a wjack an the clutch just drops completly down.
Car wouldnt go in car so i was stuck. Called the aa, who came after about an hour, he adjusted the clutch cable, which somehow managed to come off at the engine side and i drove it home perfectly fine.
Apparently he said its not supposed to happen(

) and he said it could be something to do with the pedal box.
i asked the vw garage if it had any outstanding recalls couple of months back, and i had the clutch adjusted because i had alot of play with it.
i am pretty pee'ed off about this, anybody know what it could be?

Sounds like exactly what happened to me about 18 months ago. Pulling away from a friend's house, went to change from 1st to 2nd and *bang* then the clutch pedal went loose. Couldn't put in gear, just like you. I took the same action as you and called VW Assistance, their techie diagnosed that the clutch cable had failed, and manually adjusted it so that I could drive the car away. Had the cable replaced under warranty in August '04!
The guy who came out to me from VW Assistance explained that the clutch cable automatically adjusts for wear during it's lifetime, and that this is what had failed. What normally happens is that as the cable wears, the pedal adjusts to keep in line with the brake pedal along side it. If the adjusting mechanism fails the pedals would eventually be out of alignment. Anyway he adjusted it manually and told me that that manual fix would last indefinitely, although of course the pedal will no longer be self-adjusting. He advised to have the cable replaced at VW, which I did, on the last day of my used car warranty
Hope this helps shed some light on the problem?
Cheers

You can DIY replace the clutch cable or around 70 from an idependant (part and labour) i think or more from a dealer
part is like 25 pounds
