Query: Various 6N(16v) electrical faults at the same time...

Just wondering if anyone else has seen this before...
Started the engine this morning, and the alternator light started to flicker (dull), then noticed that the electric windows, windscreen wipers, rear screen heater and heater fan didn't work, so an easy cop-out was to call the AA.
AA guy turns up, spends about an hour checking most electical systems in the car, and says that there are basically two faults:
1. Alternator on the way out, suggest I get it replaced at the earliest opportunity - fine I can understand this, but...
2. The power to fuse 6 is faulty (haynes manual / vw manual says fuse 6 is the heater blower), and this is connected to all failed systems above!
Now to me, it sounds like either a. someone's done a bodge on the electrics (I've had the car a total of 3 days now!) or b. a serious VW design fault!
Anyone else got a polo and had similar issues to 2. above?
