Engine Oil...?

Does anyone know what Oil Mk4 Petrols need, mines pretty low and I don't want to buy the wrong oil! I've got some VW505.00 lying round in the garage, will that work?

In my manual it says about getting a certain oil with a code like 500.00 or something. Thats what I'm confused about.

quantum silver 10w40 buy it from VW dealers. i dont see the point in trusting all those different oil companys with all there s**t just put in what VW designed the engine around atleast then you know its good stuff and do an oil change every 6 months jobs a goodun.
