I am thinking of junking the rear drums in favour of rear discs, wanna get more stopping power before tackling the engine. Does anyone know if you can just get the rear hub carriers, discs, calipers etc from a 16v or GTi and slap them on to a 1.4L??

good idea iv done it myself you'll need the rear hubs of a mk5 6N2 GTi discs pads and calpiars + carriers and the flexi pipe and the metal brake pipes2, and all it is then is unbolt all of yours and replace with the gti kit you have a rear companstor so do not use restricing valves!!
if you need any more in for or help give me a shout but its a dodle.

i think you would need the swivel hubs of a 16v aswell, at least you would need them for the front, im doing a full gti brake conversion on mine, hopefully sometime soon

Only gonna do the rears, the fronts I'll just probably get some decent discs (crossdrilled/vented) and pads. Not sure what you meant by "restricing valves" ??

on early cars like the mk1 golf mk2's etc insted of having a brake compensator they have resickting valves to do the same job still people put these in with a compensator and the car wont pass an mot as the rear brake dont realy work.
I've just put a VR6 front brake set up on my car and its spot on, the 280mm discs only just fit behind me gti wheels.
