Sup ppl! :D I just brought a 98' Polo 1.4 16V (6N I believe) in black :D

Put a grin on my face on the drive home!! So much faster than my 899CC cinq (RIP) which was written off about 5 wks ago....

Just got a few probs though, I have search and read posts and found some answers but not all answers to my probz.

1) Firstly got some rust spots on the rear quarter, door panel in the corner above the door handle and on the passenger door window edge (Pillar bit).
I got someone to have a look at it and he said that the whole rear quarter needs to be sanded down and resprayed because its metallic paint? Is this true?
Can I touch up the rust spots for now? If so whats the best stuff to use?

2) Drivers side window doesnt work - How can you check if its the motor, window switch or something else?

3) Horn doesnt work - I havent taken a look at the connection under the bonnet yet. Where is the horn? lol

4) When you rev the car slightly then let it drop, the car seems like it wants to stall but doesnt actually stall. Read about the TB and it needs full service so will be doing that. Anything else I should be aware of?

Any help much appreciated!

Welcome to the forum mate.

About your horn not working. I'm not sure if the 16v is identical to my 8v 6N in terms of fuse layout but this might help you:

First of all, the horn won't work unless the ignition is switched on! So test it with the ignition on first!

If that fails, check the fuse for the horn. Its on the bottom row of the driver's side fusebox (below the dash, behind the driver's glovebox thing). The horn fuse is one of the small, thin fuses on the bottom row, 10th from the right. Consult a Haynes manual for more info.

If the fuse isn't blown your gonna have to get a new horn. I had to replace mine when I first got my 6N.

Don't even bother going to VW for a brand new one, just go to your local scrappy and hunt about for a Polo - I bought a scrap horn for £5.

The actual horn unit is located under the passenger-side of the front bumper. Its really f*****g awkward to get to if you've had your car dropped but shouldn't be too difficult to reach with a standard setup.

Before removing the old horn its worth testing if your scrap one actuall works. Plug it into the connecter, switch on the ignition and give it a good TOOT. If all goes to plan, I found it far easier to remove the little bracket the horn is connected to - THEN remove the old horn and fit the new one, rather than trying to fit the new horn while under the car.

Good luck and I hope you enjoy the 16V!

Thnx for the warm welcome all and all those who replied with advice! :D
Will check for a new horn a.s.a.p as i checked whether the horn works whilst driving it back and no joy.

I like the polo, so much better built. Have planned some mods already although need some £££ first!
