problem with a 1.9 SDI

can any one help with a problem on my 1.9 sdi engine, when driving at speed (over 50mph) the glow plug light starts to flash, does any one why, is it a disaster waiting to happen? or is it just one of these things. (it does not effect the running of the car) cheers!

If the glow light is flashing at any point the ECU will now have a fault stored in its memory, get someone to plug in a vag com or similar or evn get a local VW dealer to check the fault reading. If it runs ok otherwise it is probably just a emissions warning of some kind. Most probable causes would be coolant temp sensor, oil pressure switch or maybe lambda probe failure? The reading of the fault code should point you in the right deirection.
