Trying to decide what cover to go for.

The 2 options i'm looking at here are:

1. The AA Option 200 with Breakdown Repair Cover - This gives Roadside and Relay with cover for repair bills of up to £500 (including VAT; less a £25 excess) per claim and up to five paid claims per year.

Can get this for £136 for 1 yr cover. It covers:
1. The Engine
All parts are covered other than exhaust systems.
2. Engine Cooling System
All parts are covered, other than in the case of damage or failure due to freezing, corrosion, erosion and blockage.
3. Fuel System
All parts are covered, other than in the case of damage or failure due to incorrect or contaminated fuel, internal blockage, adjustments and failure to meet current emission legislation.
4. Clutch
All parts are covered other than worn-out friction surfaces and release bearings.
5. Gearbox
All parts are covered.
6. Differential and Drive Line
All parts are covered.
7. Steering
All parts are covered.
8. Suspension
All parts are covered other than wheels and tyres.
9. Braking System
All parts are covered other than worn-out friction surfaces.
10. Electrical System
All parts are covered including car starter batteries other than sun roof motors and mechanisms, folding roof motors and mechanisms, window mechanisms, (electrical and mechanical), door lock mechanisms (electrical and mechanical), ignition lock and barrel, lamps, bulbs, faulty connections, speedometer and odometer.

Other Insured Parts are:
Air conditioning compressor but not any other air conditioning components.
Front windscreen wiper linkages.

Housings and Casings
These are covered provided they are damaged by the failure of an insured part.


I know the cover is good cos i used to work for The AA and i've seen it being used.

Or:
2. VW Assistance which is the equivalent of Option400 with The AA - Roadside, Relay, Homestart & Relay +. 1yr=£85 or £2yr=£145.

I had this when i bought the car, used it once and it service was excellent.

What should i go for?

personally i'd say vw assistance.

I had VW Assistance for the first twelve months with my Polo (used car deal so pretty much standard offer). When the time came for renewal I took the option of the two year's cover, this runs out in September this year IIRC. It covers the vehicle and not the driver, whereas my understanding is that the AA cover the driver so if you're in another car they will still respond to a callout.

I've had to call out VW Assistance twice, and both times they were great, but both times I them had to go to the local VW garage to pay for something to be repaired

Price them up, play them off against each other, see who's cheapest. I got mine down to £63 for the year with the RAC, free joint membership (and my brother and dad share the same first initial, so that's basically family membership!).

"xxx quoted me so much, can you beat it? can you match it? can you throw me anything in?"

That repair cover sounds useful, But then again the VW is half the price. Tricky one that. Its something I've got to get myself sorted out with at some point. ....Flip a coin!

I had vw assistance they left me at the side of the road for two hours because I wasnt a danger to other road user etc, and they said they were busy then pass me on to the AA then a third party , in the end 4 hours later I used my gfriends AA card, tow me home, and rang them back up, they did turn up till a day later and it was a third party company, but both only give you a hire car for 24 hours if you car cant be repaired at the road, and the warranty so that be up to the dealer you go to, I had all theses problems when my gearbox went and it took them two weeks to fix, but then you get that with all road recovery,

I ended up going for the AA deal.

As i said in the first post i worked for them not that long ago, and had seen their breakdown assistance and repair cover working, first hand.

Also the breakdown repair cover gives me some piece of mind.
