Yesterday, my friend try my polo gti, when run in 5000rpm @ 2nd gear,
he want to shift up to 3rd gear, but he put it wrong into to the 1st gear......... :? :? Big shaking and big sound like a bomb!!

After that, I found that there is a "Woo..........woo...." sound come
from the cambelt when the rev over 2000rpm. And the rev higher, the
sound also much loud.

Would anyone can tell me what happen about my cambelt??

PS: My Polo GTI already done 64000KM

That sounds like one of your tensioners has gone, I wouldn't run it until you have had them checked by a garage.

When my car's cambelt tensioner broke, mine made a similar noise :? when the revs went above 3000rpm there was a whistling noise which increased as the revs went higher. I took the car into my local VW dealership andthey diagnosed a broken tensioner.

Yours doesn't sound too good! Best to get it checked out at a garage for damage :(

Thank you Si and Dave,

If the car can run normal, but just have this "woo" sound.
Can I drive it for more few days?? Be coz these few days is public holiday in my city.

Should I also change the cambelt, water pump together with
the tensioner???

You're taking your own risk mate, if you drive till it breaks,it's
gonna cost you more $ to fixing extra stuff.

Change all parts at a time will save you more.

I wouldn't drive it, my water pump failed on the way home from work I noticed when I stopped in my drive and heard a funny noise from under the cambelt cover.

I thought it was the tensioners so booked it in for a early cambelt change the garage told me not to drive it at all (or even start it)and get a tow to the garage which is about 5miles away. So I got it towed there, when they took the cambelt cover off the waterpump had pretty much seized solid and the timing belt had been jumping over it ! Every tooth on the belt had been worn down and bits of belt everywhere, if I had driven it the 5 miles it would have failed before I got to the garage causing a lot of damage to the engine.

So I would not drive the car at all until its been checked. I would also get the waterpump, tensioners, belt and alternator belt changed at the same time.

Id say you may have bent something, going from 2nd at 5000rpm which is about 50mph into 1st has gotta send the revs way past 7000rpm. I hope that its not too costly but ya dont drive it. Let us know how you get on.

I once allowed a work colleague of mine to start my Polo, take it out of the loading bay at work and park it about 30 metres away in the car park (I was working at a supermarket at the time).

He got in, wiggled the gearstick around a bit (I always leave my car in gear) and turned the key. Cue lovely gruanching grinding noise due to the car still being in gear, and him not having his foot on the clutch! I start going a bit mental at this point (I had only owned the car for about 2 months) but calmed down enough to allow him a second attempt. Again, he shuffles the gearstick and turns the key. Guess what? Same thing, he's taken the 'stick out of 1st and dropped it into 4th

Suffice to say I then made him get out the car so that I could move it out of the bay

As Chris says, these things happen, but nevertheless it still makes you mad :x

Thank you to all again!!

Today, I bring my car to garage and check it detail.
The "woo...wooo" high freq. sound is not come from engine..........,
it's come from the gear box.
The garage told me your final gear is damage, but it still can work, just
have the high-pitched voice!!

Does anyone have change the final gear before??
