what oil to use?????

hi guys, i got a 1.4cl 1995 polo, and i m not sure what oil is best to use, any ideas???? and also are there any addictives i could buy to protect the engine, replys would be great, and pics welcome! cheers

You can check the viscosity on the data cards at Halfords & see what they rec , also you could search the Comma Oils site.

er, look in the owner's handbook? there will ALWAYS be a section on how & when to change the oil and what to use.
additives aren't really so much cop, if you're doing a ton of miles (like 15, 20k a year or more) you could experiment with some Slick 50 or whatever and see what happens, but generally speaking just making sure it has a good fresh supply of standard oil will do the trick. Change it slightly more regularly than the specified service period, as that's basically a backstop to stop you completely ruining the engine. If you halve the period, it won't be a major pain or bankrupt you. Doing it yourself costs less than half a tank of petrol typically and takes about 20 minutes tops.
if you can't figure out what's supposed to go in it, stick with semi synthetic 10w40 - it should work fine in most modern cars (i.e. built since the 80s). Quantum Synta Silver, if you're near a branch of GSF or somewhere else that sells it at a sensible price, otherwise Halfords own brand in the dark green bottle (get the 5L, you'll need about 2/3 of it)... apparently Castrol is to be avoided as it's refinery dregs; i just avoid it because their bottle caps are retarded and ruined my old interior.
For something getting on for 15-20 years old, slightly thicker 15w40 might be better owing to the looseness in the parts. The manual for a more recent car may even reccomend 5w30 or the like...
