'82 Polo Classic - advice please!
Posted: Tue May 02, 2006 1:58 pm

I just bought an 1982 polo classic 1.1 at Big Bang for £250
Already lowered on a 70mm spring/dampers kit and rust free!
I'm getting rid of those alloys asap, I have sorted a set of 15 inch bbs RAs with 185/45/15 tyres - same rolling radius as stock. Will I have any clearance problems?
I want to stick a back box on as well, along with a new steering wheel, as I can't be doing with the tiny one thats on as I can't see the speedo!
Painting it satin blue with a white chequered roof to match the interior.
Any other suggestions? Can I get a boot lip spoiler anywhere?
Any easy engine / box transplants?
Thanks for any help

First off, let me be the first person to welcome you to the forums!
Second of all, good find! - no rust and a good paint job for £250 sounds great to me, what sort of mileage has it done?
you'd be fine with 185/50s, not sure about 185/45s, use:
http://www.alloywheels.com/tyrecalc.asp
and
http://www.1010tires.com/WheelOffsetCalculator.asp
to work it out..
sounds like you've got a good plan so far, i'd be tempted to put a badgeless grill on it though to finish it off

Hmmm, no rust but a fair few dents - will be getting a decent-ish respray in satin blue (not a rattle can job) and a gloss white chequered roof to match the interior, after I've beaten out the dents and given them a smear of filler.
Any ideas of suppliers for stuff, especially a badgeless grill? AS I said, I'd quite like a boot lip spoiler, the black plastic style - I'm sure you could get them a while back.
On a strict budget as its only going to be my 'spare' car for when my other 2 are off the road!
Thanks for the welcome

welcome to the forum mate, nice looking polo you got there. i would of said you were right with the 45 profile. those 15" RA's are 6" wide if i'm not mistaken? you shouldn't (as far as i'm aware) have any problems. but don't take my word for it.
your plans for the polo sound great, try the usuals like awsome GTI and venom motorsport for parts but being an old model there probably won't be a wide range of bits! a bit more hunting maybe required.
i do remember seeing a small black lip spoiler for the boot on other mk2 classics. try VAG parts at the bottom of the forum, they'll certainly be able to tell you if there obsolete or whether they can get you one. part number should be - 873 827 933
Hope thats of some help! and make sure you keep us posted with you progress!
regards
Doug

will it definitely fit? I know sod all about polos, always been into beetles and vans and really modern vw stuff, the only watercooled vw I've owned before this was a new beetle!
If it fits, let me know a price including postage, would be great if its nice and cheap, my girlf has put me on a strict budget, as the last car I bought I have somehow invested over £5k in parts for it, and its not even finished yet!

Last / current project is a 69 resto cal beetle - starting with a mint, original unwelded bug. That's ongoing
I've been after a Golf MK1 GX for a while, but never found anything solid enough at the right price, then I saw the polo and thought it would be better than the golf anyway, because you don't see many polo classics anymore, where as I see loads of Mk1 golfs.
I'll keep the thread updated with pics, although its going to be 3 weeks until I start as I'm doing my finals at uni at the moment.

the exhaust side of things - i think a classic will need a specific exhaust as it has the longer body! so i don't think one off a mk2 squareback will fit!
keep us posted on your progress! you say its dropped 70mm already?

No idea, sorry. I know it has shocks and springs, and was told it was a 70mm drop. I'm going to take them out and investigate cutting the springs a little, so i'll let you know then

Is it me, or is it me?

Welcome to the world of the derby!

I take it its an 1100 CL? The spoliers were used on C formel E models and (presumably) was an optional extra across the range, you dont tend to see it much on the later cars but Ive seen the odd one or two knocking about.
You can extend the tailpipe on a normal mk2 or mk3 exhaust to reach the end of a derby. if you get an aftermarket system, its worth considering a custom one to take advantage of all the extra space for a really large rear silencer.
